EdgeMarc Series Benefits
The EdgeMarc Series converged network appliances offer reduced
costs , increased security,
guaranteed call quality, simplified
management and VoIP survivability when
delivering advanced IP services to enterprise customers.
Reduced Costs
Edgewater's EdgeMarc appliances provide up to 90% reduction in total
cost of ownership (TCO) over competing solutions over a 3 year period.
The graph below illustrates the savings provided for a typical VoIP
deployment using T1 WAN link with up to 10 concurrent calls and 50 VoIP
subscribers.

THIS REPRESENTS A SAVINGS OF $267 PER SUBSCRIBER
AND A TOTAL SAVINGS OF OVER $40,000,000 AT 150,000 SUBSCRIBERS.
Additionally, EdgeMarc appliances often pay for themselves in the initial
installation by reducing on-site time required to deploy the hosted
PBX service.
Increased Security That Resolves VoIP NAT/Firewall
Traversal Issues
Concern about the overall security of IP-based voice services is often
cited as a principal issue that limits the adoption of these services
by the enterprise. Indeed, securing VoIP transmissions with traditional
firewalls is a daunting task as VoIP signaling protocols require public
IP addresses and utilize dynamic TCP/UDP ports that sometimes originate
from outside of the firewalls. These requirements expose enterprise
customers to unnecessary risks as their LAN topology is easily discovered
and traditional firewalls using coarse-grained enforcement policies
are easily defeated. Additionally traditional firewalls that perform
NAT for data traffic do not support the NAT operations required by VoIP
protocols when using private IP addressing. This incompatibility complicates
VoIP deployments.
Edgewater EdgeMarc Series network appliances deliver comprehensive security
for the enterprise through a powerful combination of network and VoIP
security technologies. Each appliance includes a state-of-the-art VoIP-aware
firewall and NAT server to hide private IP addresses. The firewall couples
knowledge of VoIP signaling with traditional packet filtering to dynamically
open and close ports and ensure that only authorized traffic reaches
the protected LAN. It is equally proficient in handling non-VoIP data
traffic and can either augment or replace legacy enterprise firewalls.
At the same time, the included NAT server effectively hides the topology
of the enterprise LAN protecting it from many attacks including Denial
of Service failures, Trojans, Nimda, Code Red, Buffer Overflows and
over 1,000 common attack signatures for continuous protection against
hackers. Finally, the integrity of the EdgeMarc Series appliances themselves
are protected through the use of authenticated SSH tunnels for secure
remote management. This ensures that the system is not subverted through
unauthorized administrative access.
Guaranteed Call Quality
Edgewater EdgeMarc Series appliances provide sophisticated yet easy
to use QoS mechanisms to ensure the reliability of mission critical
voice and data traffic. These mechanisms are configured through flexible
user-defined policies and include traffic shaping, priority queuing
and DiffServ packet marking. They protect voice and data traffic from
contending for the same network resources to guarantee low latency and
the highest call quality possible. At the same time they ensure the
best utilization of WAN bandwidth by enabling voice or data traffic
to burst up to full line rate when possible. In addition Edgewater provides
Call Admission Control (CAC) to protect voice traffic from being negatively
affected by other voice traffic. CAC uses a deterministic algorithm
to decide when there are insufficient network resources available to
adequately support new calls and then return the equivalent of a “fast
busy” to new call requests.
Without an EdgeMarc Series appliance users experience voice clipping,
echo and dropped calls. Deploying an EdgeMarc Series appliance results
in toll quality calls for every active call and prevents new calls from
negatively impacting voice quality.
Simplified Management - Easy To Deploy, Easy
To Manage, Easy To Scale
Edgewater EdgeMarc Series appliances are purpose built for remote installation
at customer premise locations. As a result they provide several features
that enable the service provider to easily deliver high quality, responsive
service to enterprise customers:
• A secure, easy to use and understand browser-based Graphical
User Interface (GUI) that enables the service provider to configure,
upgrade and manage the appliance remotely.
• Edgewater products provide passive MOS scoring, alarms for minimum
MOS measurements and raw data for post-processing analysis such as jitter,
latency, packet loss, etc.
• DHCP, TFTP and FTP support to enable the dynamic configuration
of many VoIP phones and IADs.
• Integrated packet capture and utilization of well known IP troubleshooting
tools.
• Comprehensive interface and system utilization statistics.
Finally, integrating multiple functions usually provided by several
standalone systems into a single appliance reduces management complexity
and better positions the service provider for rapid growth.
VoIP Survivability
EdgeMarc Series appliances provide survivability features that enhance
reliability and availability of hosted VoIP service offerings. Deployed
at the customer premises they provide local station to station call
switching in the event of WAN link failures, softswitch failures or
during periods of network congestion that result in loss of connectivity
to the softswitch. They also support redundant softswitch applications.

EdgeProtect Series Benefits
The EdgeProtect Series session border controllers use a scalable architecture
to provide comprehensive
security, simplified operations
and breakthrough price/performance
for managed VoIP service providers.
Comprehensive Security
EdgeProtect Series products provide topology hiding for VoIP operations
infrastructure. Network and port address translation is used for service
provider peering applications and to ensure that network-based hackers
are not able to discover the real IP addresses of mission critical VoIP
network elements. A stateful packet inspection firewall is combined
with a VoIP application layer gateway for voice and data. Data
port scans and many types of DOS attacks are blocked by the filtering
available in the EdgeProtect 6400.
Simplified Operations
EdgeProtect Series products provide NAT/Firewall traversal to extend
the reach of VoIP services. They automatically detect when a VoIP
subscriber is behind a NAT/FW device and perform the packet translations
required to connect the subscriber to the hosted service. This is useful
in instances where VoIP-aware application layer gateways are not installed
at the CPE.
EdgeProtect Series products us an adaptive shortest path RTP architecture
that eliminates hairpinning. They will forward media that does not require
NAT/FW traversal services using the shortest IP path between VoIP endpoints.
This increases scalability and minimizes the effects of jitter and latency
on voice calls.
They also provide an easier way to manage mobile VoIP subscribers and
subscribers with frequent IP address changes (such as xDSL users) using
a Dynamic Access Control List (DACL). DACL is used to identify and authenticate
VoIP subscribers as they register with the hosted service. This authentication
mechanism eliminates the need to manually program IP addresses of valid
subscribers in other firewalls around the perimeter of the data center.
This also enables the service provider to easily support mobile VoIP
subscribers that perform frequent IP addressing changes.
Finally, EdgeProtect Series products perform passive call quality monitoring
for trend analysis and real-time troubleshooting of VoIP performance
problems.
Breakthrough Price/Performance
Based on industry standard hardware the EdgeProtect Series does not
require a large upfront capital investment and the systems can be clustered
for additional scalability and redundancy.
