Why Skype is Not an OTT App

Let's talk about Skype. Laymen (or at least, laymen who still knows what OTT means) probably think that Skype is the original OTT app. You installed it on your computer or on your mobile device, you paid nothing for it, you didn't have to go through a service provider in order to get it, and you didn't buy any infrastructure to support it. An over-the-top (OTT) app is any service that goes over telecom or internet and doesn't incur additional charges from the service provider. As such, Skype is pretty much as OTT as it gets.
